Opal vs Remind: Choosing an App Blocker for iPhone and Mac

On this page

Choose around your devices and the rules you need. Opal documents app-open limits and several ways to pause a block, alongside iOS, Android, and Mac support. Atten, becoming Remind, offers an Apple-device workflow with reusable app-and-website selections, sessions, schedules, daily limits, and optional compatible synchronization.

We make Remind, the upcoming name for Atten. The downloadable app is currently Atten. This comparison reviews official documentation checked on 25 October 2026; it is not a hands-on test of either product’s blocking reliability.

Compare the workflows you will actually use

A shared subscription, a shared block list, and a session that follows you between devices are three different things. Decide which you expect before comparing either app’s appearance or price.

QuestionOpalAtten, becoming Remind
Which devices?iOS, Android, and Mac are listed on its platform and pricing page.iPhone, iPad, and Mac on the current App Store listing.
Which rules?Sessions, Time Limits, and Open Limits on Mac.Focus sessions, recurring schedules, and daily limits using selected apps and websites.
What crosses devices? Its Mac help says sessions and Screen Time stay separate between devices. An optional account supports compatible rules and session state across Apple devices. Check each device’s setup.
What happens during an exception? Its iOS session guide describes different break restrictions and an emergency exit.Choose and test the session, schedule, and break behavior available in your installed Atten build before a long block.

Atten’s iPhone page and Mac page show its current workflow. If the decision is whether to install another app at all, start with Screen Time versus a dedicated blocker.

Check your actual devices and Mac browser

Opal’s Android guide covers timed blocks and daily budgets. Feature parity is incomplete. An Android requirement therefore does not rule Opal out. Atten’s current supported product scope is Apple devices.

Opal’s setup documentation lists Chrome, Safari, Opera, Edge, Brave, and Arc. Setup also requires browser Automation permission. It excludes Dia and lists Firefox among requested additions. Check your browser against that list before paying. We did not test these browsers for this article.

Opal’s iPad help and current US store compatibility information differ. If iPad support is essential, confirm installation and purchase eligibility on your own iPad rather than assuming every iPhone feature transfers. A product’s subscription covering several devices also does not mean its sessions synchronize.

Decide how an interruption should work

Opal’s iOS session documentation describes several break modes. They include immediate breaks, increasing waiting time, and a paid stricter option. It also documents a weekly Emergency Pass that cancels running rules. Those are choices about friction; they do not establish that every possible bypass is prevented.

For daily budgets, Opal’s Time Limits guide describes a shared allowance across one selection. Put unrelated apps in separate limits if you want separate budgets. Start with the outcome you need: fewer app opens, less total use, or a clear work period.

For either app, write down one necessary exception before blocking. Check authentication, course materials, communication, and accessibility tools during a short trial. Our Mac app-blocking guide gives you a practical acceptance check.

Accounts and privacy

Opal says iPhone browsing and blocking data stays local; see its privacy explanation. Its broader privacy policy describes account, service, device, and website information. Local blocking does not mean the entire service collects no data.

You can use Atten without signing in. Optional synchronization involves account and rule data; the current Atten policy explains those uses. This comparison is a policy review, not a technical privacy audit or a privacy ranking.

Check the purchase you are being offered

Opal publishes free and paid options, but its pricing and help pages do not consistently describe free recurring-rule entitlements. We are not publishing an exact price or free-rule count from those conflicting descriptions. Check Opal’s current pricing and the offer in your store; use Atten’s current App Store offer for Atten.

  • Confirm the currency, renewal period, trial end, and total charge.
  • Check whether the exact schedule or exit option you want requires payment.
  • Check how your purchase is restored on your other devices.
  • Verify the rule on the app and website you use, with an essential tool left available.

Choose a first test, then decide

Opal is worth a closer look when its documented app-open controls or graduated break options match your problem. Atten is an option for a reusable Apple-device block list with optional compatible synchronization. Neither choice needs an untested claim that it will work better for everyone.

Build one recurring hour in the free focus planner, then try that same routine in your shortlisted app. If Windows or a Chromebook is part of your day, read the Freedom comparison before choosing.

Comparison methodology

We checked vendor help pages, platform listings, privacy statements, and purchase descriptions. Our evaluation criteria are device and browser coverage, rule setup, synchronization, exception behavior, and account requirements. Conflicting pricing and iPad details remain unresolved. We have not measured setup speed, block reliability, or resistance to bypasses.
